The JEE Main 2025 exam will be administered by the authorities in two sessions, in January and April.
Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the JEE Main exam follow different patterns. However, for both sessions, the identical JEE Main 2025 paper patternwill be used. The JEE Main exam pattern 2025 states that each topic for paper 1 will include ten numerical value questions and twenty multiple-choice questions (MCQs), of which students must attend 5 questions. Those interested in learning more about the JEE Main exam pattern 2025 can view the article below.
You can find the JEE Main 2025 Exam Pattern (Changes) at jeemain.nta.ac.in.
Significant modifications to the JEE Main 2025 exam pattern:
-
Elimination of Optional Questions: In Section B, candidates are no longer able to select five of the ten questions.
-
Required Questions: Each of the three subjects (mathematics, chemistry, and physics) in Section B will have five questions, all of which must be answered.
-
All Papers Affected: Paper 1 (BE/BTech), Paper 2A (BArch), and Paper 2B (B. Plan) are all impacted by the modification.
(*) - For Paper 2A (B. Arch), the drawing test is done in pen-and-paper style on an A4-size drawing sheet, while the mathematics and aptitude test is done in CBT mode.
There are two sections for each subject in the JEE Main 2025 Exam: Section A and Section B. There are 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in Section A and five required numerical value questions in Section B. There are no sections for the aptitude, drawing, and planning tests.
The total score for the JEE Main 2025 B.E./B. Tech Paper is 300, and the scores for the B. Arch and B. Planning are 400 each.
-
For every right response, candidates receive four marks; for every incorrect response, they receive a negative mark of one.
-
Unattempted questions do not result in a mark deduction or award.
-
In the JEE Main 2025 Exam, questions designated for review will likewise receive zero points.
For all three papers, the aforementioned marking structure applies to both multiple-choice and numerical problems.

Advantages of the New Exam Pattern 2025
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a significant change in the JEE Main 2025 exam pattern, reverting to its pre-pandemic format. From 2025, Section B will include only five mandatory numerical questions across each subject. This change is expected to:
-
Lower cut-offs because there is negative marking and there are no optional questions.
-
Emphasize the importance of a comprehensive study approach
-
All sections in the exam – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics will now hold the same weight.
-
Students must attend all 75 questions divided into 25 questions for each section
Candidates were allowed to choose any 5 out of 10 numerical questions in Section B of each subject. This flexibility was intended to help students tackle the hurdles posed by the pandemic and was in place until the JEE 2025 exam. However, from 2025, JEE Main Section B will revert to its pre-pandemic format, comprising only 5 numerical questions per subject, all of which will be mandatory.
Students will benefit from the new pattern in the following ways, according to NTA.
-
If a candidate is unable to put their 100% effort on first attempt, they will have two more chances to enhance their exam marks.
-
Students who take the exam for the first time will experience it first-hand and will be aware of their mistakes, which they can fix in the next attempt.
-
This will lessen the likelihood of a year-long drop, and droppers won't have to waste a full year.
-
No one will have to wait a full year if they miss the exam due to uncontrollable circumstances (like the Board exam).
-
A candidate does not have to show up for both sessions. On the other hand, a candidate's JEE Main 2025 NTA Scores will be taken into account for the merit list/ranking if they show up for one session.
JEE Main Exam Pattern 2025: Mode of Questions in Papers 1,2,3
Every subject will have two portions per the IIT JEE exam pattern. Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) will be in Section A, while questions that require a numerical answer will be covered in Section B. Candidates must attempt any 05 (five) of the 10 questions in Section B. Both Section B and Section A will receive negative grades. Using the mouse and the on-screen virtual numeric keypad provided for entering the answer, candidates must input the right numerical value for each question in Section B. The response for Section B needs to be rounded to the closest whole number.
